Female Contraception: Nexplanon
Nexplanon is the most reliable, quickly reversible and non-permanent form of birth control. It is a small, thin and flexible implant that is placed just under the skin of the upper arm. It is more reliable than the pill because you don’t have to remember to take it every day. Nexplanon lasts for 3 years and is covered by most extended health benefits. The only active ingredient is Progesterone and it is safe to use during breastfeeding. Nexplanon has been available in Canada since 2020 but has been used in other countries for many years. Dr. Folden has been fully trained and has experience in the implantation and removal of Nexplanon. You can book a free consultation (with Alberta Health Care insurance) if you want to know more about the device without a referral. For more information: https://www.nexplanon.com/

Intrauterine Device IUD
An IUD is a small device that is placed in the uterus that helps prevent pregnancy. There is a hormonal (Mirena/Kyleena, progesterone only) and non-hormonal (Copper) option. The hormonal option is often used by gynecologists to control heavy periods and often women will stop their periods all together. The IUD is one of the most effective forms of birth control. The failure rate is between 0.2 and 0.8%. After it is fitted, you don’t ever have to remember to take a pill. All types of IUDs have the advantage of working locally in the uterus and disrupt your own hormonal cycle. All types of IUDs are safe to use while breastfeeding and are easily and quickly reversible should you decide to remove the IUD and resume fertility. The IUD lasts for 5-10 years depending on the type you choose. Book a free consultation if you’d like to know more about the IUD options and if it’s right for you.
